Course Descriptions

Art I (Grade 9-12)  Drawing and Painting (#110) 1 Semester

This class concentrates on two-dimensional art through different types of drawing (realistic, cartoon, architectural, figure, etc.), with a variety of media: pencil, colored pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, chalk, etc.  Paintings with watercolor, water color pencil, and acrylic paints, and with mixed media (torn paper painting), will be done.  Other two-dimensional areas will be printmaking, advertising art, and calligraphy.
Art II (Grade 9-12)  Crafts (#111) 1 Semester
Students will work in a variety of craft areas: wood burning, cut paper folk arts (Scherenschnitte, Wysanki, Japanese,  silhouette, or contemporary), fiber arts: basketry, stenciling, glass etching, Indian beading, mask making, papermaking and the design of a book, and pottery.
Art III (Grade 9-12)  Pottery and Sculpture (#112) 1 Semester
Pottery will concentrate on hand-built construction using pinch, slab, coil and drape methods.  There will be time to experiment on the potter's wheel.  Sculpture projects will be architectural model making, and designing in foam, wood, wire and paper.
Advanced Art (Grade 9-12) (#113) (prerequisite Art I) 1 Semester
In this class the student will  do further experiments in drawing (pencil, colored pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, chalk, etc.) and painting, ( watercolor, water color pencil, acrylic, etc.), concentrating on two-dimensional art at a more advanced level.  Skills in media usage will be developed as the student explores their favorite media in depth, as the course is geared towards student's individual interests and needs.  The student will lern how to mat one or more of their art works.
Independent Art (Grade 11-12) (#114) (prerequisite 4 semesters of Art)
For the student who is interested in total visual arts immersion.  This course is geared towards the student's individual interests.  The student creates a list of the projects and media that they wish to work with and conference with the teacher to plan their course.

Note: Students in grades 10-12 will be given preference in art courses, 9th graders may take    Art classes on an as-room basis.

Note: There will be a student art show presented to friends and family in May each year.  The goal  is to exhibit at least one art work from each Art student.  Some students create their own mini-shows in the hallway galleries.  The show is held in conjunction with the Red Rock Central High School Spring music concert.

Art 8 (12 weeks-trimester)

This class deals with  perspective in a graphed drawing enlargement and a two-point perspective project.  Acrylic painting is done with a color mixing project (tint, shade, and tone chart), as a preliminary exercise.  And we will do a water color pencil painting.  Drawings are done in scratch art, pen and ink, chalk  and charcoal. Design concepts are studied in an optical art and a symography unit.  Three-D projects include a crimp art a sculpture, and a clay pottery and sculpture unit.
Art 7 (12 weeks-trimester)
Students concentrate on a number of design projects to give them a strong background  in the elements of line, color, shape and form, space, and texture.  The principals of design: balance, unity, contrast, emphasis, movement, rhythm, and pattern will be stressed.   Two-dimensional projects include: the design unit, acrylic painting, the color wheel, pen and ink drawing and calligraphy, scratch art, water color pencil painting, chalk and charcoal works.  Mobile design, basketry, pottery, and clay sculpture are our three-dimensional art.

Note: All junior high art students are encouraged to participate in an art show that is held in conjunction with the junior high Spring concert.

Elementary Art K-5

(year long, 25 minutes per week/per class) is offered at the Jeffers Elementary Site.    Elementary students are exposed to a variety of media in 2-D and 3-D projects, introducing them to the art elements (line, color, shape, form, space, and texture) and the principals of design (balance, unity, contrast, emphasis, movement, rhythm, and pattern.)

Note: Elementary Art works will be displayed at the Spring elementary concert.
