Erin Zempel broke the school record in the 100 meter hurdle at the state track meet Friday, June 5th at the Blaine Sports Center.  Erin's record breaking time was 15.55 in the prelims and earned the right to advance to the finals on Saturday.
In the second half of the prelims in the 300m hurdles, Jane Mathiason was leading the race as she went over the last hurdle.  Only a few feet from the finish line, Jane's trail leg hit the hurdle, causing her to fall.  A silence fell ever the crowd as Jane lay on the track.  She finally made it up and over to the first aid tent.  Jane is going to be all right with some badly bruised knees and the heartbreak of not being able to finish the race and run in the finals.
One would hope that the horrible experience of Jane would not happen again, but it did.  Erin Zempel got out to a terrific start in the finals of the 100 meter hurdles.  Erin was hurdling well and in medal contention when she hit the last hurdle and crashed to the ground.  Somehow she made it up and crossed the finish line to take ninth place.
Erin caught her foot on the last hurdle in the finals of the hurdles and fell to the ground.  At the time she was running about in fourth place.  She immediately got up and finished the race, placing 9th in a time of 18.42.
She received scrapes on her right shoulder, elbow, knee and hip.
Erin spent the next hour in the first aid tent with her various injuries being worked on.  What a heartbreaking way to end the season.
Congratulations to Erin and Jane for their valiant effort at the state track meet.  WWG and RRC can be proud of these two young ladies for their great representation at the state meet.  Although they were extremely disappointed they conducted themselves as young ladies, with fantastic sportsmanship.  Way to go!
