The McCone Sod Houses

This is located 20 miles from Walnut Grove.
It is on the Laura Ingalls Historic Highway,
1 mile east, ¼ mile south of Junction of Highway 71 & 14.

There are two full-sized houses furnished like the 1880’s surrounded by prairie grasses and wildflowers.

Stan McCone built these sod replicas in 1987-1988 as a personal tribute to the homesteaders who came to this treeless prairie. Stan and his family presently live on the farmsite where the sod houses are standing.

The wildflowers are blooming all summer. Their peak time is july.
The tallgrass prairie reaches its height in late summer-early fall.
