My name is Phil Goetstouwers,
typically known by the students as Mr. G and I am the counselor and principal at
Red Rock Central. Since there is plenty
of information that comes to my attention daily, I wanted to provide the same
information to the students and parents in the most effective way
possible.
FAFSA
(Free Application for Federal Student Aid) - For most schools,
complete by March 1st. Some
schools suggest if you are the first child in your family to attend college,
you should apply by February 15th.

Here are the basic questions many scholarships ask:
1. Include basic information about yourself including name, address, and
phone number.
2. What are you plans for the future?
Include where you plan to go to college, what you intend to major in,
and what you hope to be doing after you complete your post-secondary education.
3. How have you been involved in school activities as well as how have you
been involved in your community?
4. Why should this scholarship select you?
1. U.S. Bank Internet Scholarship
Program
a. Eligibility: Any senior planning to
attend a 2- or 4-year college full-time next fall.
b. Awarded Based On: This award is awarded
in a random drawing.
c. Requirements: None. No essays and no
GPA requirement. Apply online at http://usbank.com/scholarship
d. Amount: Forty $1,000
scholarships will be awarded in this random drawing.
e. Deadline: Program runs October
through March.
2. KFC Colonel’s Scholars Program
a. Eligibility: Seniors pursuing a
bachelor’s degree at a public institution within their legal state of
residence.
*Scholars
may begin their college career by entering into either a 2- or 4-year
accredited, public (state-funded) college or university within their state of
legal residence, as long as they stay on track to complete a bachelor’s degree
program.
b. Awarded Based On: Outstanding seniors with financial need and
entrepreneurial spirit.
c. Requirements:
1.
Minimum GPA of 2.75.
2.
Enroll in a public college or university within their state of
legal residence.
3.
Plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree.
4.
Be a US citizen or permanent resident.
5.
Demonstrate financial need.
6.
Complete application online.
d. Amount: Up to $20,000 for
tuition, fees, textbooks, room and board.
e. Deadline: The online scholarship
application will be available from December 1 to February 8 at www.kfcscholars.org
3. Best Buy
a. Eligibility: Any student
in grades 9-12 who was “solid grades” and involved in volunteer community
service or work experience.
b. Requirements: Visit the website to

c. Amount: 1,000 scholarships of
$1,500 each.
d. Deadline: Between December 26th-February
15th.
4. GE-Reagan Foundation
a. Eligibility: Must demonstrate
exemplary leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship at school, home, and
community.
b. Requirements: Complete the application
at www.reaganfoundation.org/scholarships
c. Amount: 20 college-bound
students will receive $10,000.
d. Deadline: February 17.
5. Basin Electric Power
Cooperative/South Central Electric Scholarship
a. Eligibility: Anyone who is a
dependent of a South Central Electric member.
Can be a high school student or college students enrolled full-time in
an accredited two-year or four-year college.
b. Requirements:
1.
Complete a two-page application
2.
Send transcript with ACT scores
3.
Write a one-page essay on the topic: “How would you describe the
value of your local cooperative to you and your immediate family?”
c. Amount: $1,000.
d. Deadline: February 17th.
6. South Central Electric Association
Youth Tour Essay Contest
a. Eligibility: Sophomores and Juniors who attend RRC and 8 other school districts around
the area. Children of directors or
employees are not eligible.
b. Requirements: Submit the application
and write an essay on the following topic: “What are your goals for the future
and why do you want to represent South Central Electric?”
c. Amount: 1st place
wins a trip to Washington D.C., 2nd place wins $150 and 3rd
place wins $100.
d. Deadline: March 17th.
7. Freedom Foundation of Minnesota’s
“A Legacy of Leadership: The Ronald Reagan High School Essay Contest
a. Eligibility: Only open to one high
school student of any age from RRC.
b. Requirements: Ask Mr. G. Rules and guidelines can be found at www.freedomfoundationofminnesota.com/reagan
c. Amount: $5,000, $3,000, or
$1,000.
d. Deadline: February 29th.
8. 2012 Minnesota Twins Father of the
Year Essay Contest
a. Eligibililty: Anyone grades 1
through 12.
b. Requirements: Write an essay of 300
words or less describing the relationship with their father. More information can be found at www.fathers.com/contest
c. Amount:$500. Grade level essay
winners will be selected statewide.
d. Deadline: February 29th.
9. Buick Achievers Scholarship
Program
a. Eligibility:
1.
Students who will be enrolling as a first-time freshman at a
4-year college or university
2.
Plan to major in one of the following: science, technology,
engineering, math, business administration, finance marketing, or design
3.
Are interested in a career in the automotive or related
industries

c. Amount: Up to $25,000/year for
up to 4 years. 100 scholarships each up
to $25,000/year and 1,000 scholarships each at $2,000.

Seniors that have been a junior member in the American Legion
Auxiliary for the past three years and hold a current membership card.
2.
Good character.
3.
Have at least a 3.0 GPA.
b. Requirements:
1.
Complete application.
2.
Four letters of recommendation.
1. One from principal or
guidance counselor from school.
2. One from
Clergyman/clergywoman.

Any senior furthering their education in any phase of the health
care field.

Must be a member of an American Legion Auxiliary Unit in the
Department of Minnesota for a minimum of three years.
3.
Maintain a 2.0 GPA
b. Requirements: Complete the
application.
c. Amount: One-year scholarship
for $1,000.
d. Deadline: March 15th.

American
Legion Auxiliary Department of Minnesota Scholarship
a. Eligibility:
1.
Must be direct descendants, step-children or step-grandchildren

A Minnesota resident or member of the American Legion Auxiliary,
American Legion or SAL, Department of Minnesota

American
Legion Auxiliary For Non-Traditional Students
a. Eligibility:
1.
Must be a member of the American Legion, American Legion
Auxiliary, or Sons of The American Legion and shall have paid dues for the two
preceding years and for the calendar year in which application is made.
2.
A non-traditional student returning to the classroom after some
period of time.
b. Requirements:
1.
Complete application
2.
Copy of college transcript if applicable
3.
Work history
4.
Copy of FAFSA
c. Amount: Five scholarships of
$1,000.
d. Deadline: March 1st.
15.
MSCA
Scholarship Program
a. Eligibility: Seniors who plan to
attend a post-secondary institution in the fall of 2012.
b. Requirements:
1.
Complete application.
1. Pick one up in Mr. G’s
office or www.mnschoolcounselors.org
2.
Complete 1-page (500 words) essay describing how a licensed
school counselor or counseling program has helped to encourage them with a
personal or academic accomplishment.
3.
Mr. G must sign the entry form.
4.
Complete the entry form.
c. Amount: Eleven $1,000 scholarships.
d. Deadline: March 1.
16.
Redwood
Area Hospital Foundation
a. Eligibility:
1.
Any senior pursuing a health care career.
2.
Have a GPA of 3.0 or better.
3.
Display leadership in the school or community.
b. Requirements:
1.
Include an essay explaining why you are pursuing a health care
career.
2.
Complete the application.
Can pick up an application at Mr. G’s office or call Karen Melges, the Foundation Director/Volunteer Coordinator

c. Amount: $500.
d. Deadline: March 2nd.

Redwood
Electric Cooperative Scholarship
a. Eligibility:
1.
Seniors who plan to continue their education by attending
college, trade school, or vocational school.
2.
Must be children of a parent or guardian who are members of
Redwood Electric Cooperative.
b. Requirements:
1.
Complete the application.
2.
Submit a transcript.
3.
Have two letters of recommendation from academic teachers who
have had the student in class within the last 18 months. The recommendation
form should be completed by the teachers and sent directly to the cooperative.
4.
One page narrative stating why you should receive the
scholarship.
c. Amount: Has not been
determined.
d. Deadline: March 2nd.
18.
George
and Alice Mann Fund Scholarship
a. Eligibility:
1.
Any
graduating senior from each of the four Minnesota school districts: Windom Area
High School, Jackson County Central, Red Rock Central, and Southwest Star
Concept School.
2.
Seniors
who plan to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an
accredited 2 or 4-year college, university, or
vocational-technical school in the United States.
3.
Must
have a minimum GPA of 2.75.
b. Requirements:
1.
Send
a transcript, which includes a copy of your ACT scores.
2.
Complete
the application.
3.
A
parent or legal guardian must co-sign and Mr. G must sign it.
4.
A
personal statement from the applicant.
5.
A
written reference from your current employer.
c. Amount: $250 per year for years one
and two and will be in the amount of $1,000 per year for years three and four.
d. Deadline: March 15th to Mr.
G’s office.

Reuben Youngerberg Memorial Biodiesel Essay
Scholarship
a. Eligibility: Any senior from Minnesota
with plans to attend a postsecondary education.
b. Requirements:
1.
Write
a personal essay on the topic of biodiesel. Choose one topic.
1. How biodiesel benefits
Minnesota.
2. Expanding biodiesel use:
opportunities and challenges.
3. Biodiesel in my town: how can
you impact biodiesel use in your area?
2.
Complete
application and send to American Lung Association of Minnesota, 490 Concordia
Avenue, Saint Paul, MN 55103. (Attn: Biodiesel Essay Contest) This form can
also be found at www.CleanAirChoice.org/fuels/scholarship2012.cfm
c. Amount: 1st place is $1,600
and 2nd place is $500.
d. Deadline: March 30.

Foundation Scholarship
a. Eligibility: Any junior or senior MN or WI student who had a parent
become injured or killed in the course of working for a MN or WI employer.
b. Requirements: Complete application

c. Amount: Up to $5,000 per year.
d. Deadline: March 31st.

Alert Magazine
a. Eligibility: Any senior with a
minimum GPA of 2.5 who plans to attend college after graduation.
b. Requirements: Write an essay
(600-1,000 words, double-spaced) about a personal encounter you or someone you
know has had with drug and/or alcohol abuse, how it was dealt with, what you
learned from it, and what was right or wrong (in your opinion) about the way
the incident or problem was handled.
c. Amount: $500.
d. Deadline: No deadline as they
publish twice yearly.
22.
Minnesota
Women’s Golf Association Foundation Scholarship
a. Eligibility: Senior girls
graduating high school with a minimum GPA of 3.2 and planning to attend a
four-year college program.
b. Requirements: Complete the
application and a Student Aid Report (SAR) as submitted to FAFSA showing the
parents income level for the past year. This must be included when the
application is sent.
c. Awarded Based on: Scholastic rating,
financial need, and school achievements, leadership, and activities. Although skill or excellence in the game of
golf is not a criterion, candidates shall demonstrate an interest or
involvement in the sport.
d. Amount: $3,000 per year,
renewable for four consecutive years.
e. Deadline: March 31st.

a. Eligibility:
1.
Planning to attend a higher education institution.
2.
Minimum GPA of 3.0
3.
Parents or student must be a United FCS customer.
4.
Selection is based on academic aptitude, vocational promise,
personal attributes and leadership qualities.

c. Amount: 24 $500 scholarships.
d. Deadline: April 1.

Legion Auxiliary Unit #41
a. Eligibility: Any anticipated
graduate of Red Rock Central planning on obtaining a post-secondary education.
b. Requirements: Complete application,
which can be picked up from Mr. Goetstouwers and write
an essay explaining why they are seeking this scholarship and complete the
application.
c. Amount: $325.
d. Deadline: April 13th.
25.
Student
Honor Loan Chapter Loan & Scholarship
a. Eligibility: Any graduating senior
planning on pursuing their education beyond high school within one year of the
following fall.
b. Requirements:
1.
Complete the application and turn in to Mr. G for the scholarship
AND/OR loan.
2.
Repayment plan of the loan must be established within 12
months of leaving, finishing, and/or graduating from post-secondary school.
c. Amount: The scholarships last
year were $250 and the interest-free loan was $600. Recipients must be
full-time students and maintain an acceptable GPA in order to receive their
scholarship.
d. Deadline: April 13th.

Glen
R. Meyer Scholarship
a. Eligibility: Any graduating RRC
senior.
b. Requirements: Complete application
and return it to Mr. G.
c. Amount: $300.

Sylvester
Schunk Educational Scholarship
a. Eligibility: Must have a Sanborn or
Springfield address and be full-time college student (12
credits/semester). Preference
given to those going into agricultural field, but all majors considered.
b. Requirements:
1.

Provide a one paragraph summary of career plans

a. Eligibility:

Students who are majoring or planning to major in one of the
arts.

enrolled in a college or technical school majoring in one of the arts.
b. Requirements: Complete the

old and is a US citizen.

–Transition Readiness Insights Useful for Moving to Post-Secondary Higher
Education. These are FREE
CLASSES that prepare you for post-secondary education. The academic offerings in math, writing, and
reading will assist in improving your basic academic skills. It may also assist you in improving your
scores on your Accuplacer test in order to avoid
taking remedial courses and paying for them.
The average cost of a remedial course will be between $300-$500 and
depending on where you place on the Accuplacer, you
may have to take up to three additional courses per subject. TRIUMPH is free! Information in this course includes: college preparatory skills, math, writing,
reading, applications, registration, financial aid, Accuplacer
test, time management, study skills, goal setting strategies, problem solving
strategies, decision-making techniques, personal finances, effective
communication, and self esteem.
