            My name is Phil Goetstouwers, typically known by the students as Mr. G or Dr. Phil, and I am the counselor at Red Rock Central.  Since there is plenty of information that comes to my attention daily, I wanted to provide the same information to the students and parents in the most effective way possible. 

FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) - For most schools, complete by March 1st, 2010.

Juniors should set up a time with me to discuss post-high school plans.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY:  Students ages 16-24: A summer volunteer program is available at Sanford USD Medical Center from June 1 through middle/late August for 30 hours per week.  Applications must be received by May 1st and can be found at www.sanfordhealth.org.

1.     Christopher Lee Miller Scholarship

a.     Eligibility: Any senior planning on attending a 2 or 4 year college.

b.     Requirements: None.

c.      Awarded Based on: In memory of Chris, this scholarship is intended for any student that is like Chris in GPA and effort.  A student whom exemplifies a good work ethic, regardless of GPA.

d.     Amount: There will be three $250 scholarships this year.

e.     Deadline: Faculty will vote after first semester.

2.     US Bank Internet Scholarship Program

a.     Eligibility: Any high school senior planning to enroll next fall at an eligible four-year college or university participating in the U.S. Bank No Fee Education Loan Program

b.     Requirements: Apply online at www.usbank.com/studentloans  (recipients will be selected via random drawing)

c.      Amount: $1000 (forty scholarships will be awarded)

d.     Deadline: Applications accepted October, 2009 March 2010

3.     Youth American Cancer Society

a.     Eligibility: Any student under the age of 25 that have been diagnosed with cancer before the age of 21.

b.     Requirements:

                                                                       1.      Complete application.

                                                                       2.      Have physician complete verification form.

c.      Amount: The awards will be paid directly to the institution of choice and will supplement the Fall 2009 semester tuition costs.  

d.      Deadline: March 15, 2010.

4.      Kohl’s Kids Who Care Scholarship Program

a.     Eligibility: Students ages 6-18 who  volunteer or do great work to benefit the community.

b.     Requirements: Need to be nominated, but will allow self-nominations.  Visit www.kohlskids.com for more information.

c.      Amount: Varies.

d.     Deadline: March 15, 2010.

5.     American Legion Auxiliary Past Presidents Parley Health Care Scholarship

a.     Eligibility:

                                                                       1.      Any senior furthering their education in any phase of the health care field.

                                                                       2.      Must be a member of an American Legion Auxiliary Unit in the Department of Minnesota for a minimum of three years.

                                                                       3.      Maintain a 2.0 GPA

b.     Requirements: Complete the application.

c.      Amount: One-year scholarship for $1,000.

d.     Deadline: March 15th.

6.     Water is Life Art Scholarship

a.     Eligibililty: Students in grades 9-12 who have artistic ability through photography, sculpture, painting, drawing, and short videos.

b.     Requirements: Complete application and artwork.

c.      Amount: Six $500 scholarships.

d.     Deadline: March 15, 2010.

7.      George and Alice Mann Scholarship Fund

a.     Eligibility:

                                                                       2.      Any graduating senior from each of the four Minnesota school districts: Windom Area High School, Jackson County Central, Red Rock Central, and Southwest Star Concept School.

                                                                       3.      Seniors who plan to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited 2 or 4-year college, university, or vocational-technical school in the United States.

                                                                       4.      Must have a minimum GPA of 2.75.

b.     Requirements:

                                                                                                     i.      Send a transcript, which includes a copy of your ACT scores.

                                                                                                   ii.      Complete the application.

                                                                                                 iii.      A parent or legal guardian must co-sign and Mr. G must sign it.

                                                                                                iv.      A personal statement from the applicant.

                                                                                                  v.      A written reference from your current employer.

c.      Amount: $250 per year for years one and two and will be in the amount of $1,000 per year for years three and four.

d.     Deadline: March 15th, 2010.

8.      Minnesota Women’s Golf Association Foundation Scholarship (*One of our students received this scholarship last year)

a.     Eligibility: Female seniors who are planning to attend a four-year university.  Minimum GPA of 3.2.  Although skill or excellence in the game of golf is not a criterion, candidates shall demonstrate an interest or involvement in the sport.

b.     Requirements:

1.     Complete FAFSA

2.     Complete application

3.     Submit transcript, including ACT scores.

c.      Amount: $3,000 per year, renewable for four years.

d.     Deadline: March 31, 2010.

9.      Redwood Area Chamber Agriculture Future of America (AFA) Scholarship

a.     Eligibility: A senior seeking post-secondary education in the field of agriculture and/or related fields with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

b.     Requirements: 

                                                                       1.      Complete application and if selected, is required to attend a conference held in Kansas City, MO in the fall.

                                                                       2.      Write essay describing how you perceive the future of agriculture and why are you seeking to be part of this industry.

                                                                       3.      Interview

c.      Amount: $4,200 ($3,200 scholarship and $1,000 conference fee)

d.     Deadline: March 31,2010.

10.                SFM Foundation

a.     Eligibility: Any student ages 16-25 planning to attend a two- or four-year college who have had a parent become injured or killed in the course of working for a Minnesota or Wisconsin employer.

b.     Requirements:

                                                                       1.      Complete application, which can be found at www.sfmic.com/foundation

                                                                       2.      Send in transcript

                                                                       3.      Two letters of recommendation

                                                                       4.      State report verifying the injury

c.      Amount: $1,000 to $5,000.

d.     Deadline: March 31, 2010.

11.                American Federation of Teachers Robert G. Porter Scholars Program

a.     Eligibility: Graduating senior who is a dependent of a current AFT member.

b.     Requirements:

                                                                       1.      Complete application at http://www.aft.org/benefits/scholarships.cfm

                                                                       2.      Two letters of recommendation

                                                                       3.      Personal statement

                                                                       4.      Essay of less than 500 words

c.      Amount: Four 4-year $8,000 scholarships.

12.                The Salon Professional Academy

a.     Eligibility: Anyone interested in attending The Salon Professional Academy.

b.     Requirements:

13.                Cottonwood County 4-H/Livestock Improvement Association Scholarship

a.     Eligibility: Graduate in 2010, have at least 4 years completed in Cottonwood County 4-H, and continue education after high school graduation. Must also show leadership, commitment, and participation by one or more of the following: county ambassador program, club/county officer, participation in 4-H trip, or served on club/county committee.

b.     Requirements: Complete application.

c.      Amount: Up to two $500 scholarships.

d.     Deadline: April 1, 2010.

14.                 United FCS

a.     Eligibility:

                                                                       1.      Live in the surrounding 22 county area

                                                                       2.      Planning to attend a higher education institution.

                                                                       3.      Minimum GPA of 3.0

                                                                       4.      Parents or student must be a United FCS customer.

                                                                       5.      Selection is based on academic aptitude, vocational promise, personal attributes and leadership qualities.

b.     Requirements: Complete application.

c.      Amount: 24 $500 scholarships.

d.     Deadline: April 1, 2010.

15.                American Legion Auxiliary Girl Scout Achievement Award

a.     Eligibility:

                                                                       1.      Junior or Senior girl who have earned the Girl Scout Gold award

                                                                       2.      Must be actively involved in a religious institution

                                                                       3.      Must have demonstrated practical citizenship in the religious institution, school, Girl Scouting, and community

b.     Requirements:

                                                                       1.      Submit at least one letter of recommendation with application from an individual representing one of the following: your church, school, community, or scout troop

                                                                       2.      Submit a 500-word essay describing your Gold Award project.  Why did you choose it and how did it make an impact on you and your community.

c.      Amount: $1.000 ALA National Level Scholarship.

d.     Deadline:  April 1st.

16.                St. John Lutheran Home Foundation Award

a.     Eligibility: Employees of St. John Lutheran home.

b.     Requirements: More information can be found at www.sjlhome.com or call 723-3200.

c.      Amount: Four $500 scholarships and one $300 scholarship.

d.     Deadline: April 2nd, 2010.

17.                Red Rock Central Education Association Scholarship

a.     Eligibility: RRC seniors planning to attend either a two or four-year college.

b.     Requirements:

                                                              i.      Write an essay and return to Mr. G or Mrs. Manthei.

1.     Include basic information about yourself including name, address and phone number.

2.     What are your plans for the future?  Include where you plan to go to college, what you intend to major in, and what you hope to be doing after you complete your post-secondary education.

3.     How have you been involved in school activities as well as how have you been involved in your community?

4.     Why should the RRCEA committee select you?

c.      Amount: Two $250 scholarships.

d.     Deadline: April 9th, 2010.

18.                Glen R. Meyer Scholarship

a.     Eligibility: Any graduating RRC senior.

b.     Requirements: Complete application and return it to Mr. G.

c.      Amount: $300.

d.     Deadline: April 9, 2010.

19.                Lamberton Reading Club Scholarship

a.     Eligibility: RRC senior who is planning to attend a vocational or technical school after high school starting in the summer or fall of 2010.

b.     Requirements:

                                                                       1.      Write an essay and return to Mr. G.

1.     Include basic information about yourself including name, address and phone number.

2.     What are your plans for the future?  Include where you plan to go to college, what you intend to major in, and what you hope to be doing after you complete your post-secondary education.

3.     How have you been involved in school activities as well as how have you been involved in your community?

4.     Why should the Lamberton Reading Club select you?

c.      Amount: $300.

20.                Esther Anderson Memorial Scholarship

a.     Eligibility: RRC senior who is planning to attend a vocational or technical school after high school starting in the summer or fall of 2009.

                                                                       1.      Requirements:

1.     Write an essay and return to Mr. G.

a.     Include basic information about yourself including name, address and phone number.

b.     What are your plans for the future?  Include where you plan to go to college, what you intend to major in, and what you hope to be doing after you complete your post-secondary education.

c.      How have you been involved in school activities as well as how have you been involved in your community?

d.     Why should the Lamberton Reading Club select you?

b.     Amount: $500

c.      Deadline: April 9, 2010.

21.                American Legion Auxiliary Unit #41

a.     Eligibility: Any anticipated graduate of Red Rock Central planning on obtaining a post-secondary education.

b.     Requirements: Write an essay explaining why they are seeking this scholarship and complete the application.

c.      Amount: $250.

d.     Deadline: April 9th, 2010.

22.               Lamberton American Legion Scholarship

a.     Eligibility:  A senior boy attending Red Rock Central High School planning to further their education next year at a post secondary institution.

b.     Requirements:  Complete application, which includes a short essay.

c.      Amount:  $250.

d.     Deadline:  April 9, 2010.  Turn in to Mr. G at school.

23.               Student Honor Loan Chapter Loan & Scholarship

a.     Eligibility: Any graduating senior planning on pursuing their education beyond high school within one year of the following fall OR any 3rd year college student who graduated in 2007, if they applied and received a scholarship or loan from the Student Honor Loan Chapter and have completed 5 semesters of college.

b.     Requirements:

                                                                       1.      Complete the appropriate application and turn in to Mr. G.

                                                                       2.       Repayment plan of the loan must be established within 12 months of leaving, finishing, and/or graduating from post-secondary school.

c.      Amount: The scholarship for seniors is $250 and the interest-free loan is $600. Recipients must be full-time students and maintain an acceptable GPA in order to receive their scholarship.  The LOAN for 3rd year students is $450 if all requirements are met and DEADLINE to turn in application is February 25, 2010.

d.     Deadline: The scholarship deadline is April 9th, 2010.

24.                Redwood Area Theatre

a.     Eligibility: Anyone involved with theatre.

b.     Requirements:

                                                                       1.      Complete application.

1.     Describe your college plans (not to exceed 100 words)

2.     List past/current theatre participation

3.     Provide two essays, each between 200-300 words, typewritten, and double-spaced.

A.    What role has theatre played in preparing you for college?

B.     How do you envision theatre as a part of your future?

                                                                       2.      A letter of recommendation.

c.      Amount: Up to three $100 scholarships awarded.

d.     Deadline: April 9th, 2010.

25.                Windom Area Hospital

a.     Eligibility:

                                                                       1.      Any student pursuing a healthcare career.

                                                                       2.      Must have minimum GPA of 3.0.

                                                                       3.      Officially accepted into a healthcare program.

b.     Requirements:

                                                                       1.      Complete application.

                                                                       2.      Write an essay describing:

1.     Reasons for choosing a health-care profession.

2.     Career goals after graduation.

3.     How receiving this scholarship will benefit you.

                                                                       3.      Three references

1.     From an instructor.

2.     From a current supervisor.

3.     From a co-worker. If you do not have previous work experience, you may submit a reference from an administrator, coach, or an adult (non-relative).

                                                                       4.      Proof of enrollment into a healthcare program.

                                                                       5.      Official transcript.

c.      Amount: Several $1,000 scholarships.

d.     Deadline: April 10, 2010. Application must be returned to the Windom Area Hospital Foundation, Attention Katie Slette, PO Box 339, Windom, MN 56101.

26.                Sylvester Schunk Educational Scholarship

a.     Eligibility: Any senior or college student.  Must have a Sanborn or Springfield address and be full-time college student (12 credits/semester).  Preference given to those going into agricultural field, but all majors considered.

b.     Requirements: 

                                                                       1.      Complete application and mail to: Sylvester Schunk Education Scholarship, PO Box 126, Springfield, MN  56087

                                                                       2.      Provide a one paragraph summary of career plans

                                                                       3.      Include list of involvement in school and community organizations

                                                                       4.      Submit two reference letters: the first must be from a member of the clergy and the second should be from the high school principal or counselor

c.      Amount: Varies and can be applied for in subsequent years.

d.     Deadline: April 14, 2010.

27.                The American Legion

a.     Eligibility: Biological or legally adopted children of active-duty U.S. military and National Guardsmen, and reservists who were mobilized and died on active duty on or after Sept. 11, 2001. Must be a high school senior or high school graduate to apply for the scholarship. Scholarship is for undergraduate study at a U.S. school of higher education.

b.     Requirements: visit website www.legion.org/needalift  and download scholarship application.

c.      Amount: Varies.

d.     Deadline: April 15, 2010.

28.               Chief-Hawk Scholarship

a.     Eligibility: Any RRC senior athlete who excels in athletics as well as academics.

b.     Requirements:  Complete application and return to Bryce Pack.  

c.      Amount: $750.

d.     Deadline: April 15, 2010 to Bryce Pack.

29.               Sanford Health Network

a.     Eligibility:

                                                                       1.      Any student pursuing a healthcare career.

                                                                       2.      Must have minimum GPA of 3.0.

                                                                       3.      Officially accepted into a healthcare program.

b.     Requirements:

                                                                       1.      Complete application.  Can be picked up in Mr. G’s office.

                                                                       2.      Write an essay describing:

1.     Reasons for choosing a health-care profession.

2.     Career goals after graduation.

3.     How receiving this scholarship will benefit you.

                                                                       3.      Three references

1.     From an instructor.

2.     From a current supervisor.

3.     From a co-worker.

                                                                       4.      Proof of enrollment into a healthcare program.

c.      Amount: $2,000. $1,000 will be funded by Sanford Health Network and $1,000 will be funded by the local SHN facility.

30.                Laura Ingalls Wilder Scholarship

a.     Eligibility: Anyone involved in the production of “Fragments of a Dream” in Walnut Grove either as an actor or in a technical support area.

b.     Requirements: Complete application (4 questions).

c.      Amount: Not stated.

d.     Deadline: Mailed to the address below and received no later than Saturday, April 23, 2010. Christy Hemp, Secretary-Wilder Pageant Committee, 311-9th Street, Walnut Grove, MN 56180

31.                Prairie Arts Continuum

a.     Eligibility:

                                                                       1.      Students who are majoring or planning to major in one of the arts.

                                                                       2.      Must currently reside in Windom or Red Rock Central School districts OR have graduated from one of these school districts and currently be enrolled in a college or technical school majoring in one of the arts.

b.     Requirements: Complete the application.

c.      Amount: Amount not yet determined.  Last year, two $500 scholarships were presented.

d.     Deadline: Postmarked no later than April 28 and mailed to Prairie Arts Continuum, PO Box 6, Windom, MN 56101.  

32.                2010 Minnesota Clean Air Choice Scholarship

a.     Eligibility: Any senior from Minnesota with plans to attend a postsecondary education.

b.     Requirements:

                                                                       1.      Write a personal essay on the topic of biodiesel. Choose one topic.

1.     How biodiesel benefits Minnesota.

2.     Expanding biodiesel use: opportunities and challenges.

3.     Biodiesel in my town: how can you impact biodiesel use in your are?

                                                                       2.      Complete application and send to American Lung Association of Minnesota, Attn: MN Clean Air Choice Scholarship, 490 Concordia Avenue, Saint Paul, MN 55103. This form can also be found on http://www.cleanairchoice.org  or contact Emily Herman at 651-268-7612.

c.      Amount: 1st place is $1000 and 2nd place is $500.

d.     Deadline: 4:30 pm on April 30, 2010.

33.                Minnesota Association of Townships Scholarship Program

a.     Eligibility: Juniors, 11th graders, that plan to further their education at a college, university, or vocational school.

b.     Requirements:

                                                                       1.      Complete an application and send it to Minnesota Association of Townships Scholarship Program, PO Box 267, St. Michael, MN 55376

                                                                       2.      Write an essay.

                                                                       3.      Submit a transcript.

                                                                       4.      Submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher or counselor.

c.      Amount: Four $1,000 scholarships.

d.     Deadline: May 1st, 2010.

a.     Eligibility: Any area high school seniors and post-secondary students interested in pursuing health care careers, without stipulations on post-graduation relocation.

b.     Requirements:

                                                                       1.      Complete application and return it to Scott Thoreson, Administrator, Springfield Medical Center-Mayo Health System, 625 N. Jackson Avenue, Springfield, MN 56087. www.sahcf.com

                                                                       2.      Write an essay on your interest in health care.

1.     What influenced your decision to enter a health care field?

2.     What qualities and experience do you feel you have which will benefit you in your study?

3.     In what ways do you expect your future career will be satisfying and rewarding?

                                                                       3.      Include a current transcript of high school or post-secondary grades.

                                                                       4.      Request two recommendations from instructors, administrators, or adults (non-relatives) who are aware of the student’s accomplishments and interest in the health care field.

c.      Amount: Last year it was $500.

d.     Deadline: May 1st, 2010.

35.               Society of Women Engineers

a.     Eligibility: High school women with outstanding achievement in science and math and considering pursuing a career in science and engineering.

                                                                       1.      One female junior and one female senior.

                                                                       2.      Minimum GPA of 3.5.

b.     Requirements: Complete application at www.swe.org

c.      Amount: 25 scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $5,000.

d.     Deadline: Merit award candidates must submit information by March 31, 2010. Scholarship applications must be submitted by May 15th.

36.               Great Clips Cosmetology School Scholarships

a.     Eligibility: Anyone interested in pursuing a career in cosmetology or barbering.

b.     Requirements:

                                                                       2.      Complete application.

                                                                       3.      Attach a one-page essay why cosmetology interests you.

                                                                       4.      Include a letter of recommendation from a professional, other than parents or relatives.

c.      Amount: $500 scholarships

d.     Deadline: May 31.

1.     Alexandria Technical College

a.     Eligibility: Seniors planning to attend ATC.

b.     Requirements: Complete application at www.alextech.edu/foundation

c.      Amount: varies.

d.     Deadline: Be accepted and complete application by April 1st.

2.     Buena Vista University

a.     Eligibility: Seniors planning to attend Buena Vista.

b.     Requirements: Audition January 30th and February 20th.

c.      Amount: Five full tuition scholarships, four full tuition and double occupancy room and board, participation awards, honors programs that give students $2,000, and the Dean’s Fellowship Program including a $2,000 travel stipend.

d.     Deadline: January 30th and February 20th are the audition days.

3.     Northern State University

a.     Eligibility: Seniors planning to attend Northern State and hopes to receive a music scholarship.

b.     Requirements: Audition February 19th and 20th.

c.      Amount: $8,000.

d.     Deadline: Prior to February 19th.

4.     Texas Lutheran University: Pacesetter Award for College Excellence

a.     Eligibility: Seniors planning to attend TLU with a minimum GPA of 3.5.

b.     Requirements: Be admitted to TLU.

c.      Amount: $18,000.

d.     Deadline: February 6, 2010.

5.     University of Minnesota – Carlson School of Management.  “Alpha Kappa Psi Scholarship Fund

a.     Eligibility: Must have a 3.75 GPA and leadership experience.

b.     Requirements: Complete application.  Learn more about AKPsi at www.akpsionline.com

1.     Submit resume, activities list, or copy of U of M application.

2.     Submit transcript.

3.     Write an essay of no more than 500 words describing your goals or most memorable leadership experience.

c.      Amount:  Eight scholarships with the combined value of $100,000, which includes tuition and housing.

d.     Deadline: Submit the application to scholarships@akpsionline.com by January 29th, 2009.  Interviews would be on February 27.

6.     University of Minnesota

a.     Eligibility:

c.      Amount:  3-$1,000 scholarships and a housing scholarship.

T.R.I.U.M.P.H. –Transition Readiness Insights Useful for Moving to Post-Secondary Higher Education.  These are FREE CLASSES that prepare you for post-secondary education.  The academic offerings in math, writing, and reading will assist in improving your basic academic skills.  It may also assist you in improving your scores on your Accuplacer test in order to avoid taking remedial courses and paying for them.  The average cost of a remedial course will be between $300-$500 and depending on where you place on the Accuplacer, you may have to take up to three additional courses per subject.  TRIUMPH is free!  Information in this course includes: college preparatory skills, math, writing, reading, applications, registration, financial aid, Accuplacer test, time management, study skills, goal setting strategies, problem solving strategies, decision-making techniques, personal finances, effective communication, and self esteem.
