Red Rock Central District No. 2884
Monday, November 20, 2000


The regular monthly meeting of the Board of Education, District No. 2884, was held in the elementary school library in Jeffers on Monday, November 20, 2000. Members present were: Clarke, Gransee, Imker, Johnson, Mattison, Moldan, and Therkilsen. Superintendent John Brennan, Principal Forrest Benz, Principal Norman Johnson, Paula Derickson, Joe Dietl, Craig Meyers, Bryce Pack, Bob Rise, Judy Westerman and Lucille Hagert were also in attendance.

Chairman Johnson called the meeting to order at 7:32 p.m.

Upon motion of Therkilsen, seconded by Imker and unanimously carried, to amend the agenda.

Upon motion of Imker, seconded by Clarke and unanimously carried, to approve the minutes of the October 16, 2000 meeting.

Upon motion of Therkilsen, seconded by Moldan and unanimously carried, to approve the treasurer's report.

Dave Nester of Nester and Nester presented the audit report for the 1999-2000 school year. It was learned there was an improvement of $350,000 over last year which was positive; however, there was a decrease of $9,102 in the fund balance. As of June 30, 2000, there was a total of $206,000 in all funds. The district is in compliance with all spending caps allowable by law.

Upon motion of Clarke, seconded by Gransee and unanimously carried, to transfer $8,467.21 from the General Unreserved Fund to the Food Service Fund, and $19,825.98 from the General Unreserved Fund to the Community Service Fund effective June 30, 2000.

Upon motion of Moldan, seconded by Gransee and unanimously carried to accept the well presented audit with which the Board was pleased.

Gransee gave the CRTC Report. RRC owes $83,464.69 in tuition. Contracts had been approved for Aviation and Medical Careers teachers.

Dave Moldan gave a report on the Redwood County Joint Powers Board . Plans are being made to combine the Children's Mental Health Collaborative and the Redwood County Collaborative into one unit.

Principal Benz reported there was good attendance at the Fall Concert held on November 6. Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences were held on November 9, with 90 % of parents and students attending. The FLA Whopper Feed held during the evening of conferences was a success. The Fall Play performance, under the direction of Jenifer Kirsch, was given on November 17-18 with approximately 350 persons in attendance. Thirty-nine students will be attending the annual Prairie Winds Arts Festivall on November 21 in Westbrook. Seven new computers have been installed and are a real asset to the larger classes; the Computer Labs are always busy. Winifred Churchill is an excellent souce of help to students and staff in the PC Lab. The Student Council sponsored a Costume Day on Halloween. Four students will be attending the Augustana Band Festival on November 3-4. The System Accountability Meeting will be held November 30 at Lamberton. The FLA will once again be sponsoring a Blood Drive on Decemer 14 at the High School. The Junior High Concert will be held December 4. The Decathlon team has been practicing. The Social classes have been preparing for the election. Pre-registration booklets for the 2001-02 school year will be finalized in December. Mid-terms will be due on December 11. The first semester ends on January 19.

Principal Johnson reported there was a good turn out for Parent-Teacher Conferences. He planned to address the Privacy Data issue with the school volunteers. Grandparents Day was well attended and everyone did a great job. The Veterans Day Program was conducted by local Legion and Auxiliary members. The Wall of Honor was especially well received. The Elementary Christmas Concert will be held December 11 at 7:00 p.m. The next Community Education Committee Meeting will be held January 8, 2001. A newsletter will be mailed to District residents with Community Education offerings.

Upon motion of Clarke, seconded by Mattison and unanimously carried, to pay claims in the amount of $95,370.57. Receipts were $350,050.81.

The Board had previously tabled the Superintendent's recommendation to extend Leonard Runck's contract to a twelve month basis and provide a provision to include a number of days for vacation. Superintendent Brennan had met with the teachers and it was determined a twelve month contract does not conflict with the teachers' contract being it is an extension of the contract.

Upon motion of Therkilsen, seconded by Imker and unanimously carried to approve a "well deserved" extension of Leonard Runck's contract from an eleven month teaching contract to a twelve month contract with a vacation allowance, retroactive to July 1, 2000.

Upon motion of Clarke, seconded by Gransee and unanimously carried to accept the resignation of Troy Gilb as Girls Head Volleyball Coach and thank him for his services on and off the volleyball court.

The Superintendent's contract extension was postponed to a later date.

Upon motion of Moldan, seconded by Gransee and unanimously carried, to follow the state's bidding process in the purchase of a new school bus similar to the last one purchased but with a larger fuel tank.

Upon motion of Imker, seconded by Clarke and unanimously carried, to employ Bill Nickel as Assistant Girls' Basketball Coach for the 2000-01 school year.

Open discussion was held on District Goal Setting for 2001, voting on an Excess Levy Referendum, proposed school funding reform, and facililty needs.

The Truth in Taxation meeting will be held December 4 at 7:30 p.m. in Lamberton.

Upon motion of Mattison, seconded by Moldan and unanimously carried, to adjourn the meeting at 9:33 p.m.
