Monday, November 17, 2003

The regular monthly meeting of the Board of Education, District No. 2884, was held in the elementary school library in Jeffers on Monday, November 17, 2003. Members present were: Derickson, Gransee, Imker, Mattison, and Myers. Clarke and Meyer were tardy. Superintendent Brennan, Administrative Assistant Olson, Lead Teacher Westerman, Ken Kraemer, Joe Dietl, and Denise Clarke were also in attendance.

Chairman Gransee called the meeting to order at 7:35 p.m.

Upon motion of Imker, seconded by Myers and unanimously carried, to approve the agenda, the minutes of the October 13, 2003 meeting, and the treasurer’s report.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

Lead Teacher Westerman gave the following report: Almost $2,400 worth of books were sold at the Book Fair. Our school gets 50% of the sales and will use the money to purchase new books for the library. Conferences went well last week. We had a 99% attendance rate. We are still serving a high number of breakfasts. We will be replacing the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills with the Northwest Evaluation Association testing program which is done on computer and given to grades 2 – 8. Writing was the subject discussed at a staff meeting today after school. We will be celebrating American Education Week this week.

Administrative Assistant Olson’s report is as follows: The Systems Accountability Report has been distributed, and there will be a committee meeting on Tuesday, November 25th at Jeffers. A speaker from Redwood County will give a Drug Awareness presentation on November 20th. Karl Randle, a victim of a drunk driving accident, presented a lyceum on decision making. The FCCLA, under the leadership of Mrs. Furth, sponsored a Blood Drive at which 56 pints of blood were collected. There were comments from the community of how nice it is to work with our students. The Fall music concert was held on October 27th. The Fall Play, "Little Women" was presented on November 7th and 8th. We have put up a wall with 2 windows on the stage overlooking the cafeteria. The stage may be used as a Senior Lounge. Parent-Teacher-
Student Conferences were held on November 13th. I attended a Crisis Response Workshop and will be updating our Crisis Plan over the summer. Building security at the High School has been increased by locking more entrance doors and putting up cameras in several areas of the school to keep a better eye on the building. Mrs. Stotesbery attended a workshop on OSHA Compliance. We will need to make some changes in our science labs and will be working with MacNeil Environmental on this task. We have been discussing options for financing a Weight/Fitness Room.

Member Derickson reported on the workshop she and Superintendent Brennan attended in Marshall that dealt with communication between School Boards and Superintendents.

Member Mattison reported on the MREA conference he attended which focused on on-line courses that could be offered at our schools.

Upon motion of Clarke, seconded by Mattison and unanimously carried, to pay claims in the amount of $110,480.76. Receipts were $430,304.25.

Upon motion of Meyer, seconded by Derickson and unanimously carried, to employ Stacey Bottelberghe as an Educational Assistant in our Preschool Handicapped Program.

Upon motion of Myers, seconded by Clarke and unanimously carried, to approve Bruce Olson’s contract for the next two years. It calls for a $3,000 increase each school year, with the final year totaling $61,000. The Board also reinstated a similar clause to Mr. Olson’s contract, which he had as a teacher, which calls for a health insurance allotment of $3,000 per year until Medicare.

Discussion was held on the Superintendent’s contract and the December 15th Truth and Taxation meeting. The Board was given a chance to vote for the SW/WC Service Coop’s Board of Directors.

The meeting was declared adjourned by Chairman Gransee at 8:50 p.m.
