School Board Minutes

Red Rock Central District No. 2884

Tuesday, November 9, 2010

The regular monthly meeting of the Board of Education, District No. 2884, was held in the Board Room in Lamberton on Tuesday, November 9, 2010.  Members present were:  Bierl, Clarke, Johnson, Kelsey, Rogotzke, Stavnes, and Westerman.  Superintendent Brennan, Principal Olson, Keith Kinner, Troy Erickson, Denise Clarke, and Joe Dietl were also in attendance.

Chairman Kelsey called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

Upon motion of Rogotzke, seconded by Johnson and unanimously carried, to approve the agenda as amended, the minutes of the October 19, 2010 meeting, and the treasurer’s report.

Keith Kinner of Kinner & Company Ltd. Presented the audit report for the 2009-2010 school year, which shows $72,900 of revenues over expenditures.  Upon motion of Clarke, seconded by Rogotzke and unanimously carried, to accept the audit as presented.

Principal Olson reported the following:  A thank you to Mr. Wegman’s Tech Ed class for forming and pouring the sidewalk out of the wrestling room to the south.  The football team finished as Section runner-up.  I have finished all the informal observations and have been to the probationary teachers’ rooms at least once.  I am now working on the veteran staff to complete the observations in their rooms.  The Red Boxes have netted us $42.76 since the last payment.  This money goes into the Student Council.  The musical “Annie” will be presented this weekend.  They have been busy preparing this for the last few weeks.  Student-Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held this Thursday evening.  We will start two Reading Strategy Mini-classes for the 7th grade and some 10th grade students.  One of the goals of this building is to increase our reading scores.  Also we have identified some students who just need a boost in order to achieve better on the state tests.  The 7th grade time will be for the first 10 minutes of study hall which Mrs. Goblish has with these students every other day.  The 8 or so 10th grade students will meet with Mrs. Wilmes during 4a time.  This is critical for these 10th grade students as they will be taking the MCA test on reading for graduation this year.  A thank you goes out to these staff members who are going the extra mile for these students.  Letters are being sent home either by mail or during PTC’s outlining this new program.

Lead Teacher Riley’s report was distributed to the board.  Grandparent’s Day was October 20th.  The theme this year was about going fishing.  The stage was decorated with many stuffed sea life creatures and even a yellow submarine.  Some of our students sang songs while pretending to fish.  The program  lasted about 45 minutes.  Mrs. Dammann did an excellent job of preparing our students for this program and accompanying them with both the guitar and keyboard.  We had a good turnout of grandparents.  November 9-11 will be our annual Scholastic Book Fair.  Our library is free of mold and has the cement floor in place.  It is not finished by any means, but it will be ready enough so the book fair can take place in the library.  Mrs. Pederson has

already put in several hours organizing this fair as well as just getting books ready to put back into our library when it is finished.  We will again be participating in the “Toys for Tots” program for which we ask our students to bring in loose change to put into a container.  Whatever is collected will be used to buy books for the “Toys for Tots” organization.  If we collect $250, for example, “Toys for Tots” will be given 250 free books from Scholastic and we will be given $250 worth of free books because of our library situation this year.  In other words, whatever we collect, “Toys for Tots” will be given that many books and we will be given that dollar amount of books.  Mrs. Pederson is also having  a special contest between the girls and boys in our school.  If the girls bring in the most money for “Toys for Tots” they will be our heroes.  If the boys bring in the most money then they will be our heroes.  Approximately 9000 books were lost because of mold, so we’re hoping we can find more ways in which we can earn some money to replace them in time.  Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held this Thursday from 4-10 p.m.  This year all K-5th grade conferences will take place in the Jeffers School gymnasium, rather than in the classrooms.  Also on November 11th we will be having a Veteran’s Day program in the Jeffers gym beginning at 2:15.  The Lamberton Legion and Auxiliary will be responsible for the program this year, and our students will be singing some patriotic songs as well.  On Tuesday, November 23rd, our first and second graders will be traveling to Wabasso for our next Integration Day.  The third and fourth graders will be hosting integration at the Jeffers site.

Upon motion of Clarke, seconded by Johnson and unanimously carried, to pay claims in the amount of $192,139.83.  Receipts were $457,230.45.

Upon motion of Rogotzke and seconded by Westerman, to adopt the following resolution:
