The regular monthly meeting of the Board of Education, District No. 2884, was held in the Board Room in Lamberton on Monday, October 15, 2012.  Members present were:  Bierl, Clarke, Erickson, Johnson, Kelsey, Rogotzke, and Stavnes.  Superintendent Brennan, Principal Goetstouwers, Lead Teacher Altermatt, Beverly Larson, Susan Olson, John Hansen, Brian Meier, Elijah Meier, Cameron Iverson, Kegan Zimmermann, Joe Dietl, and Denise Clarke were also in attendance.

 

Chairman Rogotzke called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

 

Upon motion of Kelsey, seconded by Johnson and unanimously carried, to approve the agenda, the minutes of the September 17, 2012 meeting and the treasurer’s report.

 

Elijah Meier of Sanborn and Kegan Zimmermann of Lamberton introduced themselves and explained that they were attending the meeting as Boys Scouts to earn a merit badge.

 

Lead Teacher Altermatt gave the following report:  The Elementary has had a busy month and look forward to our MEA break.  The month of October is National Anti Bullying Awareness Month.  October 10th was National Anti Bullying Awareness Day.  Each child in school wore an orange yarn bracelet for the day.  Orange is the color for Anti Bullying Awareness.  We continue each day with the 3rd and 4th graders messages on Anti Bullying being read over the intercom.  October 8-12 was Fire Prevention Week.  Preschool through 1st grade visited the fire station Wednesday morning, the 10th.  The children in Preschool through the 4th grade received a Fire Prevention packet from the Lamberton fire department.  There was a boy and girl winner from each class for the fire safety poster contest/color contest.  Kindergarten and 1st grade colored a picture and 2nd through 4th grade made posters.   The student council came up with the rules and also judged the pictures.  They announced the winners and presented them with pencils.  The posters are being displayed on the wall by the library.  We also had a fire drill on Wednesday the 10th.  Homecoming was a fun week.  Monday was hat and shades day; Tuesday was class color day; Wednesday was PJ day; Thursday was stuffed animal day and Friday was school colors day.  The parade was great.  Everyone had a great time.  There were a few things to work out for next year if we are able to participate again.  Thanks for allowing us to come.  The Book Fair will begin November 1st through the 8th.  It will end the night of our parent/teacher conferences in Jeffers.  That is always a big night for the Book Fair.  We are going to sell RRC clothing again this year at the elementary building.  It will start October 22, and continue through the night of the parent/teacher conferences.  The delivery date will be the first week of December.  More information will go home with students.  Our district had 2 cases of Pertussis (Whooping Cough).  A letter was sent home to all parents, and teachers have been recommended to get the Pertussis booster.  The flu shot will be offered to all staff and student body on October 23rd.  Grandparents Day is October 26th.  We continue to prepare for the afternoons’ program.  Our Veteran’s Day Program will be November 12th at 2:15 in the Jeffers gym.  The RRC elementary staff received twenty $50.00 gift cards from Walmart to assist teachers in purchasing items needed in their classroom.  It was a very welcomed surprise.  Mrs. Flaig, Mrs. Sorensen, and Miss Younkin are hosting students from SMSU in their field instruction experiences.  The areas are in math, social studies and early literacy.  The After School Adventures – 4H program is up to 40 children after school in Jeffers.  The program is for grades

kindergarten through 6th grade.  You don’t have to be in 4-H and they meet on the 3rd Tuesday of each month.

 

Principal Goetstouwers handed out the System Accountability Report to the Board and gave the following report:  We had a very successful Homecoming week.  Coronation was Monday night with skits and speeches, the dress-up days were fun and creative, everyone enjoyed the parade, and the school and community showed support, spirit and pride.  We had a lyceum on October 8th put on by Camfel Productions called “The Pledge”.  It was about anti bullying and making a difference in a positive way.  The Career Expo which our 10th graders attended at SMSU went well.  They learned about many careers available in southwest Minnesota.  Our Juniors and Seniors will attend the College Fair at SMSU on October 23rd.  About 80 colleges and some military will be represented there.  FFA updates:  The horses, soils, and poultry teams have attended Region 6 competition.  Poultry came in 3rd and Soils came in 4th.  There was an officer meeting last Wednesday where Capital Outlay and improvement with FFA were discussed.  The Quarterly FFA member meeting was last Friday.  Fruit sales start today and will last until Thanksgiving, the Corn Drive was a success and officers and members discussed how to disburse the corn drive contributions.  Target gave RRC two $50 gift cards based on a Facebook promotion of Target.  Gift cards are given to improve student success.  Mid-quarter was on September 28th.  Grades were given to all students, but only sent to parents of students who received D-‘s, F’s and I’s.  The fall musical, “Once Upon a Mattress,” has begun rehearsing and has 45 students in grades 7-12 involved.  Show times are November 9th at 7 p.m. and November 10th at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.  The volleyball and football teams will be starting sectionals soon.  Volleyball (7th seed) will host Ellsworth (10th seed) on October 22nd.  Football  (TBD).  We have 6 students interested in gymnastics.  There will be a meeting tomorrow night in Lamberton.

 

Board Member Johnson attended a meeting of the Tri-County Joint Powers Board where the audit and budget were discussed.  Their next meeting will be held in February.

 

Upon motion of Clarke, seconded by Bierl and unanimously carried, to pay claims in the amount of $72,403.95.  Receipts were $2,082,997.08.

 

Upon motion of Johnson, seconded by Kelsey and unanimously carried, to begin Board of Education meetings at 6:30 p.m. the months of November 2012 – March 2013 and to move the November regular meeting to Tuesday, November 13th in order to canvass votes of the November election.

 

Upon motion of Kelsey, seconded by Erickson and unanimously carried, to accept the 2012-2013 Seniority List as presented.

 

Discussion was held regarding repair of a door in the Jeffers building, the Jeffers bus garage, open enrollment, FFA corn drive, State aid, Kindergarten numbers in the future, Learning Readiness and ECSE.

 

Upon motion of Clarke, seconded by Bierl and unanimously carried, to adjourn at 8:00 p.m.
