School Board Minutes

Red Rock Central District No. 2884

Monday, October 15, 2007

The regular meeting of the Board of Education, District No. 2884, was held in the Board Room in Lamberton on Monday, October 15, 2007.  Members present were:  Derickson, Kelsey, Moldan, Myers, Rogotzke, and Westerman.  Clarke was absent.  Superintendent Brennan, Principal Olson, and Lead Teacher Riley were also in attendance.

Chairman Derickson called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

Upon motion of Kelsey, seconded by Myers and unanimously carried, to approve the agenda as amended, the minutes of the September 17, 2007 meeting, and the treasurer’s report.

Several parents attended the meeting to address a concern that happened in the Jeffers building.  Speaking for the parents were Jim Polk, Troy Erickson, Brenda Derickson, and Melinda Miller.  The Board took their comments under advisement and study.  Chairman Derickson thanked them for attending the meeting.

The Board discussed having 6th graders in this year’s musical and understood the situation being unique.  6th graders will be allowed in this year’s musical.  It was understood that our practice is to not allow 6th graders involvement in secondary programs but this was a special situation.

Lead Teacher Riley reported the following:  On October 5th our 1st and 2nd grades hosted the first Integration Day for this year.  The next Integration Day will be November 2nd.  Our 3rd and 4th grades will be hosting that day.  Last Friday we completed the fall NWEA testing.  We are now having our kindergarteners and 1st graders taking the NWEA’s instead of DIBELS tests as in the past.  October 8-12 was Fire Prevention Week.  Grandparent’s Day will be October 26th.  The children will present a short program at 1:30 in the gym and then the grandparents are invited to visit the classrooms.  October 29-November 2 is Red Ribbon Week.  On October 31st we will be having a masquerade ball in our gym.  We had no fire drills or lock downs so far this month because of not wanting to interrupt the NWEA testing.

Principal Olson offered the following report:  I have visited the classrooms of all staff that will have informal observations this year and have completed the first round of formal observations of untenured staff.  NWEA testing is complete in this building.  We have had 2 fire drills, 1 lockdown drill, and 1 evacuation drill.  The seniors went to College Fair Day at SMSU in Marshall and the Sophomores went to Career Day, also at SMSU.  We are investigating the possibility of starting a Challenge Class of College Computer.  Homecoming week activities went really well and the dance was well attended.  Our students attended the lyceum, “Fitness Forever.”

Upon motion of Moldan, seconded by Rogotzke and unanimously carried, to pay claims in the amount of $53,246.22.  Receipts were $590,863.10.
