Monday, October 15, 2001
The regular monthly meeting of the Board of Education, District No. 2884, was held in the Board Room in Lamberton on Monday, October 15, 2001. Members present were: Derickson, Gransee, Mattison, Meyer, Moldan, and Myers. Imker was absent. Superintendent Brennan, Principal Johnson, Jan Benedict, Anjie Horn, Deb Altermatt, Brenda Derickson, Joe Dietl, and Denise Clarke were also in attendance.
Chairman Gransee called the meeting to order at 7:42 p.m.
Upon motion of Moldan, seconded by Mattison and unanimously carried, to approve the agenda, the minutes of the September 17, 2001 meeting as amended, and the treasurer's report.
Brenda Derickson was on hand to update the Board on the CAPP (Comprehensive Arts Planning Program). The $7,600 matching two-year grant allows us an opportunity to evaluate all the Fine Arts programs in our District and collectively plan for the future. A committee will be formed from members of the community, teachers, administration and board members. The next meeting will be held in the Lamberton school library on October 25th at 6 p.m.
Principal Benz's report was distributed to the board and read as follows: Homecoming 2001 was a success. The 8th grade took their water study field trip on October 2nd. The 7th grade took the Iowa Test of Basic Skills on October 2nd. County Health personnel did hearing and vision screenings on October 3rd for grades 7, 8, 10 and 11. Mid term reports for the first quarter were sent out on October 4th. The sophomores took their practice writing test on October 4th. Lt. Governor Mae Schunk visited our school on October 10th. She met with various people including student representatives for each Social Studies section and RRCNet personnel. The Iowa Test of Basic Skills was given to 8th graders on October 12th. We have had 4 fire drills thus far - fastest time was 76 seconds. Twenty-eight juniors will take the PSAT test October 16th. On October 17th the choir will travel to Westbrook for their annual choir festival. The Senior High fall concert will be presented on October 29th. The MCIS (Minnesota Career Information Systems) workshop will be held at the RRC computer lab on October 31st. Fall play practice has begun and will be presented Friday and Saturday, November 16th and 17th. The first quarter ends Friday, November 2nd, with parent-student-teacher conferences on Thursday, November 8th from 4-10 p.m. In coming weeks the 2nd semester schedule will be refined with students. The FFA corn drive has been postponed until next October 23rd, in the afternoon.
Upon motion of Meyer, seconded by Derickson and unanimously carried, to pay claims in the amount of $159,599.42. Receipts were $1,232,995.81.
Principal Johnson reported that the Elementary has completed 4 fire drills. During Fire Prevention Week, an art contest was held and Mr. Vold talked to the kids about fire prevention. Trooper Kathy spoke to the students about safety. Pledge Across America took place on October 12th. Students raised $700 for the Salvation Army to help other kids. ITBS Test will be sent out October 16th.

Grandparents Day will be October 26th from 1:30-3 p.m. Veteran's Day will be celebrated November 7th from 2-3 p.m. Sixty kids are participating in the breakfast program. The Accelerated Reading Program is going well. Community Ed met and the new officers are: Jane Moody - Chair, Kristi Sell - Secretary, and Sharon Musegades - Vice Chair. A copy of the Community Education Annual Report was distributed to the board. The next Community Ed meeting will be held on January 29th in Jeffers at 7:30 p.m.
Upon motion of Derickson, seconded by Myers and unanimously carried, to accept the seven percent (7%) increase and other changes in the two-year cycle Master Agreement with the professional staff. This acceptance of the Teachers' Contract is approved because if has been shown that the District is within the projected structural balance over the lifetime of the contract. It is further understood that if the projected positive balance changes to a structural imbalance, administrative reductions will be made within the School District.
Upon motion of Meyer, seconded by Mattison and unanimously carried, to accept the resignation of Marlene Jackels as a cook in the Jeffers building and thank her for her many years of service to the children of the District.
Upon motion of Myers, seconded by Mattison and unanimously carried, to increase the mileage reimbursement from 26 cents to 30 cents retroactive from October 1, 2001.
Upon motion of Myers, seconded by Moldan and unanimously carried, to allow the Central Staff Development Committee and the Superintendent to approve one three-hour college class every five years for all teachers and allow them to use that specific class as movement on the salary schedule.
Discussion was held regarding next year's sixth graders being moved to the Lamberton building, a possible day care program in the Jeffers building, and changes in the curriculum.
The meeting was declared adjourned by Chairman Gransee at 9:16 p.m.
