School Board Minutes

Red Rock Central District No. 2884

Monday, October 13, 2003

The regular monthly meeting of the Board of Education, District No. 2884, was held in the Board Room in Lamberton on Monday, October 13, 2003. Members present were: Derickson, Gransee, Mattison, Meyer, and Myers. Clarke and Imker were tardy. Superintendent Brennan, Sue Olson, Jan Benedict, Joe Dietl, and Denise Clarke were also in attendance.

Chairman Gransee called the meeting to order at 7:36 p.m.

Upon motion of Derickson, seconded by Myers and unanimously carried, to approve the agenda, the minutes of the September 15, 2003 meeting as amended, and the treasurer’s report.

Lead Teacher Westerman’s report was distributed to the Board and read as follows: Grandparents Day was a huge success. We had a large crowd of grandparents, great grandparents and parents. There were many positive comments from those who attended. Breakfast numbers are increasing by the day. The last count I received was 71 breakfasts served. Our starting time needs to be adjusted as more students take advantage of the breakfast program. Last week was fire prevention week. The Jeffers and Lamberton fire departments again teamed up to bring us a short program. Mr. Vold, Joe Miller, and Fire Chief Determan talked to all students and showed them the tanker and fire truck. Each student was given a pencil and booklet.

Administrative Assistant Olson’s report was also distributed and read as follows: The Systems Accountability Report will be in the paper and flyers this week. The committee will be meeting soon. Recent field trips include: History/Ecology with Mr. Nordby and Mr. Vold, Ecology with Mr. Vold, FFA Livestock Judging, Soils Judging and Corn Drive, National FFA Convention the week of October 27th, WWG Choir Festival, Art History trip to the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Seniors College Fair at SSU, FCCLA Regional Convention and after school tutoring. Formal observations have been completed for probationary staff. Homecoming went ok. Hearing and Vision screening was completed by Redwood County Public Health. The Telemedia room has been cleaned up and is now used for a media room. I am holding meetings with separate disciplines regarding curriculum changes relating to new standards. Math has had their meeting and is far ahead on implementation. We will have to add 1 more math class at the junior level to stay in compliance with standard. If the pod is remodeled, we need to find an area for the weight room. It has not worked that well being removed from the gym that far. It does not make much sense to move weight equipment out of the pod, remodel it, and move it back in to an area that is not satisfactory. I feel it is our responsibility to provide a facility for our student athletes to better themselves. Mr. Evje has taken it upon himself to get a program going in our school. They are lifting in the morning and after school as practice time allows. Winning teams benefit school culture, climate, and attitude. Kids feel better about themselves if they are actively improving themselves. The whole school benefits from a solid program.

Gransee reported on the Redwood County Collaberative meeting at Belview.
