The regular monthly meeting of the Board of Education, District No. 2884 was held in the Board Room in Lamberton on Wednesday May 20, 2015.  Members present were: Bierl, Clarke, Hansen, Kelsey, Rasmussen, Rogotzke, and Stavnes. Others in attendance: Superintendent Olson, Phil Goetstouwers, Deb Altermatt, Doreen Kronback, Joe Dietl and Sandy Engen.

Chairman Rogotzke called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. 

Upon motion of Stavnes, seconded by Rasmussen, and unanimously carried to approve the Agenda, April 22, 2015 Board Minutes and Treasurer’s report as presented.

Lead Teacher Altermatt reported the following: Mrs. Pederson purchased nine boxes of books at the Scholastic Warehouse for the Elementary Library; Kindergarten program is Friday, May 22 at 1:00 p.m., this is their last day of school; Thursday, May 28 is the Elementary Awards Program at 10:00 a.m. followed by grilling and recess for Grades 1 – 4; RRC has two state winners of the Zaner Bloser Handwriting contest out of the 300,000 state entries; Student Council has collected 12,000  points from Labels for Education, the plan is to purchase more playground equipment, special thank you to Mrs. Furth and Mrs. Smith for their leadership with the Student Council on the label project; Fall Open House is planned for September 3, 2015 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. and Testing schedule for next year is K-2 NWEA (Math and Reading), Grades 3-4 OLPA (Math and Reading) Fall, Grades 3-4 MCA (Math and Reading) Spring, Grades 2 & 4 NWEA (Science) and no FAST.

Principal Goetstouwers reported the following:  RRC received a Bronze rating from the US News & World Report, the past 7 years RRC has received a Bronze or Silver rating; Baccalaureate and Honor Banquet went very well, Noel Wetter was the Baccalaureate speaker and $300,000 college and organiziation scholarships were awarded at the Honors Banquet; MCA’s are finished; ACT Test were taken by all the Juniors, test went smoothly, Our Saviors Church in Lamberton was a great location to administer the test; Blood Mobile held at the school met their goal; FFA State results, Soils Team – second place, Fish & Wildlife Team - fifth place, Poultry Team – eighth place, General Livestock Team – twenty-fourth place, Talent Group – Fourth Place; Physics class attended the Twins game, doing assignments during the game; Solo/Ensemble Contest results, 74 vocal and instrumental solo/ensemble entries, 43 received superior ratings and 29 excellent ratings; Private Industry Council Grant (PIC) paid for college visits for 10th and 11th graders at Mankato State University and South Central University on May 7, the visit provided an opportunity to see the differences between a 2 year and a 4 year college, if grant money is available in the future would take only grade 10 or possibly grades 9 & 10, attendance at this event was mandatory; PIC grant paid for business tours (Monsanto, Daktronics, Redwood Hospital) for grades 7 & 8 in  Redwood Falls on May 8; Drivers Education classes are scheduled for July 13 - 17 and 20 - 24 Monday through Friday both weeks from 8:00 – 10:00 a.m. and SW/WC Principals Collaborative will start in 2016 – 2017, collaborative will offer Data Mine and Principals Collaborative next year, cost include $275.00 for data team to attend Data Mine Day 1, $200.00 for data team to attend Data Mine Day 2, $400.00 for district principal(s) to attend quarterly meeting, if participating in all three the rate is $800.00, a minimum of four districts would be needed to facilitate any of these offerings, Principal Goetstouwers feels the data provided would be valuable to the district.

Superintendent Olson reported on the following:  Working on getting information for Bus Company Bid Process; Checking on making the Auto Shop a business part of the day; Will need a long term Band substitute next fall; Met with staff regarding negotiations; The request to start school before Labor Day was on the vetoed Education Bill; Auditorium roof repair has been completed and when Auditorium floor renovation project is being worked on the curtains will be taken down, and repaired.

Upon motion of Clarke, seconded by Kelsey and unanimously carried, to approve all claims for payment in the amount of $123,545.33.  Receipts were $935,100.75. 

Upon motion of Stavnes, seconded by Hansen and unanimously carried, to approve raising the Early Childhood Program Director salary $500.00 making the salary for the 2015-2016 school year $2000.00 and raising the salary $50.00 the following three years. 

Upon motion of Clarke, seconded by Kelsey and unanimously carried, to approve the 2015 -2016 Resolution for membership in the Minnesota State High School League. Roll call vote. Those in favor: Kelsey, Clarke, Hansen, Stavnes, Rasmussen, Bierl and Rogotzke.  Those against: None.  Motion carried.

Upon motion of Clarke, seconded by Bierl and unanimously carried, to approve the purchase of Van for the district in the amount of $11,948.10.

Upon motion of Hansen, seconded by Kelsey and unanimously carried, to approve the contract with Kinner & Company Ltd to perform the District 2014-2015 audit, cost not to exceed $15,000.00.

Upon motion of Clarke, seconded by Stavnes and unanimously carried, to approve the Workmen’s Comp Insurance quote of $22,180.00 and Property insurance quote of $48,877.00 from the Wanda State Bank.

Upon motion of Rasmussen, seconded by Bierl and unanimously carried, to approve the potential 26 seniors and one exchange student for graduation.

Summer Regular Monthly Board Meeting dates are: Monday’s June 15, 2015, July 20, 2015 and August 17, 2015 at 5:00 p.m.

Reaction to Future Planning was discussed; Superintendent Olson, Rasmussen and Hansen will visit with Jeffers City Council concerning future use of the Jeffers School Building; Weight room door installation has not been set; Asking advice from the Fire Marshall concerning the

Auditorium door replacement and locker room light replacement.  MN Dot conducted an unscheduled inspection of the school buses.

 

Upon motion of Clarke, seconded by Rasmussen and unanimously carried, to adjourn at 8:21 p.m.

 

The next regular monthly meeting will held Wednesday, June 15, 2015 at 5:00 p.m.
