The regular monthly meeting of the Board of Education, District No. 2884, was held in the Board Room in Lamberton on Monday, April 20, 2009.  Members present were:  Clarke, Derickson, Johnson, Kelsey, Rogotzke, Stavnes, and Westerman.  Superintendent Brennan, Principal Olson, Lead Teacher Riley, Julie Erickson, Mary Hewitt, Bryce Pack, Brett Bartholomaus, Denise Clarke, and Joe Dietl were also in attendance.

Chairman Derickson called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

Upon motion of Rogotzke, seconded by Kelsey and unanimously carried, to approve the agenda, the minutes of the March 16, 2009 meeting and the treasurer’s report.

Discussion was held regarding the possible pairing of Red Rock Central and Wabasso in the wrestling program.  Bryce Pack and Brett Bartholomaus were on hand to answer the Boards’ questions.  A formal motion will be asked for at the May meeting, but Mr. Pack was instructed to go ahead with scheduling for next year with Wabasso.

Lead Teacher Riley reported:  The 3-5 graders took the MCA reading test on April 15 and 16.  They will be doing the Math test on April 22 and 23.  The statewide tornado drill will be this Thursday.  All lockdowns are completed at the Jeffers site.  We need one more fire drill and the annual evacuation.  We are looking for a new math series to adopt for next year and have visited with representatives so we can make our choice soon.  Kindergarten roundup will take place on April 27th.  The 5th graders will be going on their Integration trip to Lake Carlos April 29-May 1.  On May 1st a representative from the Zaner-Bloser company will be coming to our school to announce and present awards to 2 of our students who won the handwriting contest at the State level.  Our Spring concert will be on May 4th.

Principal Olson reported that the Class Trip went well except for a snowstorm that delayed their return.  We will be finishing up the drills in the next month.  This Thursday is Statewide Tornado Drill Day.  We have 2 fire drills to complete, 1 more lockdown and 1 evacuation.  Next year’s schedule is pretty much in place.  Mrs. Redman had some students do well in the Cottonwood County art show.  Mrs. Furth will be taking her FCCLA teams to state at the end of the week.  Testing is ongoing yet this week for the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.  The upper classes are finished with their tests, except for the 10th grade science test.  Prom went very well, and we should thank the After Prom committee for their tireless efforts to provide a healthy and fun environment.  The Student Council split the Prom Grand March admissions with the Junior and Senior class and will be sponsoring a Walk-a-Thon with the money going to Kathy Smith, former RRC graduate, and her husband to help in their efforts with the Peace Corps.  We put in a tile line in the parking lot.

Board Member Westerman attended a Tri-County Day Treatment meeting.

Superintendent Brennan informed the Board that a representative from Minnesota West will be coming to our school Thursday to discuss making our Auto Class a college level class under the State’s PSEO.  If we are granted this option, area students can come to Lamberton for college credit without needing their local school’s transportation.

Superintendent Brennan shared his thoughts on the Federal Stimulus Bill.  Dr. Brennan believes the cut in State funding will be made up through the Federal stimulus monies, which could save close to four positions within the District.

Upon motion of Clarke, seconded by Johnson and unanimously carried, to pay claims in the amount of $117,998.28.  Receipts were $390,965.65.

Discussion was held on the following:  Flexible Learning Year Program for SW Minnesota and a meeting that Superintendent Brennan and Leonard Runck attended at Gustavus College featuring Rep. Tim Walz.

Upon motion of Clarke, seconded by Johnson and unanimously carried, to go into Closed Session at 8:45 p.m. to discuss a personnel issue.
