Red Rock Central District No. 2884
Tuesday, April 17, 2001
The regular monthly meeting of the Board of Education, District No. 2884, was held in the Board Room in Lamberton on Tuesday, April 17, 2001. Members present were: Clarke, Derickson, Imker, Gransee, Mattison, Moldan, and Myers. Superintendent John Brennan, Principal Benz, Principal Johnson, Floyd Westerman, Judy Westerman, Jason Kedl, Charles Nordby, Jan Benedict, Joe Dietl, and Denise Clarke were also in attendance.
Chairman Gransee called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.
Upon motion of Moldan, seconded by Myers and unanimously carried, to approve the agenda as amended, the minutes of the March 19, 2001 meeting and the treasurer’s report.
One bid was received for the seven (7) acres of land near the Jeffers Elementary School. Floyd Westerman bid $500.00 per acre, while the Board of Education noted $1,500.00 per acre as a fair price. The bid was rejected by the Board, the $50.00 Earnest Money was returned to Mr. Westerman, and bidding is once again open. The Finance Committee will work with Superintendent Brennan this week to determine fair cost for the land. A decision will be made in time for the special meeting on Monday, April 23, 2001.
Superintendent Brennan held a brief discussion on the happenings with the CRTC the past few weeks. Sleepy Eye’s Superintendent informed him that they will not allow Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s students to attend CRTC next year. As of now classes offered at the CRTC next year would be Graphic Arts, Auto Mechanics and Medical Careers.
Principal Benz reported the following: Three girls from Germany are staying with host families from the District for approximately 1 month. On April 3rd the Systems Accountability Committee met at Jeffers. Twenty juniors attended Boys and Girls County in Redwood Falls on April 3rd. Three students will be competing at the State level of Speech on April 20th and 21st. A tornado drill will be sounded in conjunction with the Statewide drill on April 19th at 1:45. The juniors and seniors have been making preparations for the prom which will be held April 28th. Spring Play practice is underway and will be presented May 11th and 12th. The Sr. High will present their Spring Music Concert on May 7th and the Jr. High on May 14th. More fire drills will be given this Spring. The Senior Honor Banquet will be held at the Lamberton Legion at 6:30 p.m. on May 22nd. Thirty-two State Surplus computers were brought into the High School this week, 16 of which were placed in the Tech Ed lab. The 6th grade will be touring the Lamberton building in May. Mr. Olson’s 9th grade careers class will take a trip to Mankato. Also, they will have a job shadowing day in May. Mid terms will go out the first week in May. Final registration is nearly complete. We have 28 students interested in the CRTC for the upcoming school year. The unofficial results of the Basic Standards Test show our 8th graders with an 84% passing rate in math and an 87% passing rate in reading. The 10th grade had an unofficial passing rate of 96% in writing. It was decided that Al Clarke and Dave Moldan will distribute diplomas to the graduates at Commencement May 27th.
Principal Johnson’s report is as follows: The fundraiser for the playground raised approximately $5000.00 The elementary will be practicing tornado and fire drills. A new glass fire door has been installed. The new reading series is going well. Other new programs such as STAR and Soar to Success will also be looked into for next year. Principal Johnson and Jan Benedict attended a Title meeting. At the last Community Education meeting swimming pool and drivers education wages and rates were discussed.
Upon motion of Clarke, seconded by Mattison and unanimously carried to authorize Norman Johnson as the LEA representative in filing application for funds under Title 1 for the school year 2001-2002.
Moldan, Gransee and Mattison met with school board members of area schools last week to discuss the "future of education" in our area.
Moldan reported that the Joint Powers Committee of the Redwood County Collaberative is looking into a county-wide mental health program in the school districts.
Upon motion of Mattison, seconded by Moldan and unanimously carried, to pay claims in the amount of $45,527.53. Receipts were $506,530.00.
Upon motion of Clarke, seconded by Myers and unanimously carried, to accept the resignations of Bruce Olson as Head Wrestling Coach, Steve Wegman as Assistant Wrestling Coach, and Brian Walker as Assistant Baseball Coach effective the 2001-2002 school year and thank them for their years of service to the children of this area.
Alan Clarke will resign his position on the Board of Education effective April 21, 2001, as he has moved out of the precinct he was elected from. Someone from that precinct will be appointed by the Board of Education to fill the vacancy until the end of his term. A new Clerk will be appointed at this meeting.
Upon motion of Moldan, seconded by Myers and unanimously carried, to accept the resignation of Alan Clarke as a member of the Board of Education effective April 21, 2001, and thank him for his years of service to the District.
Mattison nominated Derickson for Clerk. Upon motion of Moldan, seconded by Myers and unanimously carried, to appoint Derickson for Clerk.
The 2001-2002 school calendar was discussed. The school calendar tentatively stands as written.
Upon motion of Myers, seconded by Moldan and unanimously carried, to match up the Jazz Festival with an In-service day on the 2001-2002 school calendar.
The Community Education Committee has met and made a recommendation to the Board on salaries and fees for Drivers Education and Swimming Pool prices and salaries as follows:
Upon motion of Imker, seconded by Derickson and unanimously carried, to accept the recommendations of the Community Education Committee and set the Drivers Education and Swimming Pool prices and salaries as follows:
Drivers Education Instructor Salary: $20.00/hour

Manager - $8.50/hour; Assistant Manager - $7.75/hour; WSI First Year -$6.40/hour; WSI Second Year - $6.50/hour; WSI Third Year - $7.00/hour; WSI Fourth Year - $7.05/hour; Lifeguard First Year - $5.70/hour; Lifeguard Second Year - $5.95/hour; Lifeguard Third Year - $6.40/hour; Lifeguard Fourth Year - $6.50/hour; Lifeguard Fifth Year - $6.55/hour; Lifeguard Sixth Year - $6.60/hour.
Superintendent Brennan led a brief discussion regarding the possible purchase of a back-up boiler in the High School. A Special Board Meeting has been called for Monday, April 23, 2001, at 7:30 p.m. in Lamberton, to further discuss this issue.
Discussion was held as to finding a replacement for Alan Clarke on the School Board. A brief discussion on the upcoming German Club trip to Germany was held with regard to Foot and Mouth Disease in Europe.
It was discussed and agreed upon that each School Board Member contribute $20.00 to the Board Memorials fund in the High School Find, which will cover costs incurred for various cards, plaques, etc. during the year.
