Monday, April 15, 2013

 

The regular monthly meeting of the Board of Education, District No. 2884, was held in the Board Room in Lamberton on Monday, April 15, 2013.  Members present were:  Bierl, Clarke, Erickson, Kelsey, Rasmussen, Rogotzke and Stavnes.  Superintendent Brennan, Principal Goetstouwers, Lead Teacher Altermatt, Derek Stevenson, Joe Dietl, and Denise Clarke were also in attendance.

 

Chairman Rogotzke called the meeting order at 7:30 p.m.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

 

Upon motion of Kelsey, seconded by Bierl and unanimously carried, to approve the agenda as amended, the minutes of the March 19, 2013 meeting, and the treasurer’s report.

 

Lead Teacher Altermatt presented the following report:  MCA’s are this week, Wednesday and Thursday.  Math is this week and reading is next week.  The Student Council is purchasing doughnuts for students this week and the Lamberton Legion Auxiliary is furnishing muffins for next week.  We will have a lyceum this Thursday the 18th – Yo-Yo.  It is on bullying.  Kindergarten Round Up is April 29th at 6:30 p.m. in Jeffers.  The K-1-2 grades will be attending the play, “Who Can Fix the Dragon’s Wagon”, in New Ulm on the 25th and 26th of April.  The elementary concert will be May 6th.  Our new fire alarm system was tested on the 4th of April.  It went well considering it was a new sound and was unexpected.  There is still more work to be done on the system.

 

Principal Goetstouwers reported the following:  State testing started last week.  The National Honor Society will recognize 5 new students from this year along with 8 students from last year at an Induction Ceremony at a date still to be determined.  Mrs. Manthei will be presenting a workshop to the 5th and 6th grade teachers on Learning Navigator which uses data from MCA test results to determine areas where improvement is needed.  It’s an opportunity for students to receive extra practice lessons during the summer to be prepared for the next grade level.  Monsanto in Redwood Falls will be donating 40 safety eye glasses (shop, chemistry, etc) and a box of foam ear plugs (band, choir, shop).  On April 29th law enforcement from Redwood and Cottonwood County will do a presentation on bullying for our 7th and 8th graders.  It will be introduced by 2 of our Middle School students.  Cisco Networking Academy recognized Mr. Wegman and RRC for 10 years of Active Participation.  We have applied for a $150,000 grant from Monsanto to be used towards Engineering Methods Lab.  The Jazz Festival was very organized and the students really loved the clinicians.  The FCCLA will advance 11 students to the National competition.  A Thank You note from the participants was distributed to the Board.  The FFA held a parent informational meeting regarding the summer trip.  FFA judging competition was rescheduled from last Friday to this Thursday.  Next years’ master schedule is complete.  The Scholarships and Senior Honor Banquet fall on the scheduled board meeting date in May.  Candice Duerksen, our Spanish teacher, will be resigning.

 

Upon motion of Stavnes, seconded by Rasmussen and unanimously carried, to change the date of the May Board Meeting to Tuesday, May 21st, at 7:30 p.m. in Jeffers as to not conflict with the Senior Honor Banquet.

 

Board members Rogotzke and Kelsey volunteered to hand out diplomas at graduation.

Upon motion of Clarke, seconded by Stavnes and unanimously carried, to pay claims in the amount of $96,147.79.  Receipts were $592,777.13.

 

Upon motion of Kelsey, seconded by Erickson and unanimously carried, to grant a 3-5 year Leave of Absence to Jenifer Goblish.  Mrs. Goblish must contact the District in writing by February, of any year, of her desire to return to the District.  She will move 1 step on the salary schedule when she returns.

 

Upon motion of Erickson, seconded by Clarke and unanimously carried, to approve the proposed budget of $43,258.40 for the Southwest Integration Collaborative as presented.

 

Upon motion of Erickson, seconded by Bierl and unanimously carried, to acknowledge and accept the RRC Education Association as the sole agent for the local teachers during this negotiation period.

 

Discussion items:  FCCLA, Monsanto Grant, Superintendent selection, and Common Core Standards.

 

Upon motion of Clarke, seconded by Erickson and unanimously carried, to go into Closed Session at 8:22 p.m. to discuss the Superintendent search.

 

Upon motion of Clarke, seconded by Rasmussen and unanimously carried, to come out of Closed Session at 9:26 p.m.

 

Upon motion of Stavnes, seconded by Clarke and unanimously carried, to adjourn at 9:28 p.m.
