Red Rock Central District No. 2884

Monday, April 15, 2002



The regular monthly meeting of the Board of Education, District No. 2884, was held in the Board Room in Lamberton on Monday, April 15, 2002. Members present were: Derickson, Gransee, Imker, Meyer, Moldan, and Myers. Mattison was absent. Superintendent Brennan, Principal Benz, Principal Johnson, Nadene Moll, Brian Davis, Sean and Shari Waters, Katie Furth, Michelle DeCock, Cara Krinke, and Denise Clarke were also in attendance.



Chairman Gransee called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.



Upon motion of Myers, seconded by Derickson and unanimously carried, to approve the agenda, the minutes of the March 18, 2002 meeting and the treasurer's report.



FLA representatives Katie Furth, Michelle DeCock and Cara Krinke presented the Board with a "Thank You" poster signed by members of the FLA. The young ladies thanked the Board for the money given by the District to enable them to go to the State FLA Convention. They explained the different categories our students would be participating in and that the National FLA Convention will be held in Minneapolis this year.



Sean Waters of the "Village Insight" explained to the Board that his newspaper has expanded to the Sanborn area also. He has purchased the Storden-Jeffers Times Review as of April 11 , 2002. He explained that his goal is to preserve the unity of the Red Rock Central community. He went on to say that the response to the Teen Beat reporting duties for the "Village Insight" was great. There are 5 students grades 9-12 interested. Mr. Waters requested that if there is a classroom available for most of the day, he would like these students to be able to work on their stories during their free time. He would bring in 2 computers, a printer and a few other items related to newspaper layout.



Brian Davis expressed his concerns about non-custodial parents' rights.



Moldan reported on the April 9th Redwood County Collaborative Joint Powers Board meeting. A motion was passed that any future members to the Collaberative must contribute all LCTS dollars to the Collaborative. Another motion was passed that Cedar Mountain would be grandfathered in. The Collaborative will participate in a program called Restorative Justice. In this program victims come face-to-face with the person who committed the crime if the victim so chooses.



The meeting concerning the CRTC was again postponed.



Principal Johnson reported the following: The Accelerated Reading Program is going well. Reading Renaissance night was held on March 25th. The 6th grade participated in the D.A.R.E. program, with a program for parents presented on April 2nd. The 6th grade Math Masters team did well in their competition in Worthington. The 5th grade computer class is learning to write business letters. Information was distributed to the Board regarding Title I for 2002.



Principal Benz offered the following information: Boys and Girls County at Redwood Falls was very successful. The Systems Accountability meeting was held in Lamberton on April 11th. The Speech Team did well at Sections. Cody Hanish will be advancing to state competition. On April 10th the Speech Team hosted a parents night. We will have a tornado drill at 1:45 on April 18th in conjunction with the Statewide Drill. Mr. Olson will be taking his 9th grade social studies class to Minnesota State University - Mankato and South Central Technical College on April 24th using School-to-Work funds. Prom and after-prom festivities are in the preparation stage. Prom will be held on April 27th with 46 couples already signed up. The spring play, "Murder In A Nunnery" will be performed on May 10th and 11th. Fourth quarter mid-terms are due to Mr. Benz's office on May 2nd. On May 8th grades 9-12 will be sharing a Multi-cultural Day with Mountain Lake . The 5th and 6th graders will be touring the building the first part of May. Leon Stalls will be the Commencement speaker at graduation. The final

scheduling process is completed. The 10th and 11th grade will be testing on April 16th and 17th. Upcoming dates include: State Speech April 19-20th, State FLA April 25-27th, State FFA May 3-4th, High School Music Concert May 6th, Baccalaureate May 29th, Junior High Music Concert May 20th, and Commencement May 26th.

Upon motion of Moldan, seconded by Myers and unanimously carried to pay claims in the amount of $52,259.67. Receipts were $499,351.11.



Upon motion of Meyer, seconded by Derickson and unanimously carried, to approve the resignation of Jane Zimmermann as an Educational Assistant effective April 12th, and to thank her for her fine service to the District, and to approve the hiring of Elly Trebesch as Educational Assistant for part of the day until the end of this school year.



Discussion was held on a facility plan for the school district.



Upon motion of Moldan, seconded by Imker and unanimously carried to adjourn the meeting at 9:30 p.m.
