School Board Minutes

Red Rock Central District No. 2884

Tuesday, March 14, 2006

The regular monthly meeting of the Board of Education, District 2884, began at the Lamberton City Hall, Lamberton, Minnesota on Tuesday, March 14, 2006.  Members present were:  Clarke, Derickson, Kelsey, Moldan, Myers, and Westerman.  Mattison was tardy.

The Board and the Lamberton City Council met to discuss the Red Rock Central  Community Swimming Pool.

The meeting recessed at 8:00 p.m. and the Board moved to the Red Rock Central Board Room in Lamberton.

The meeting reconvened at 8:07 p.m.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

Upon motion of Moldan, seconded by Westerman and unanimously carried, to approve the agenda as amended, the minutes of the February 13, 2006 and February 20, 2006 meetings, and the treasurer’s report.

Lead Teacher Riley reported that the Light and Laser Show was given to us on February 22nd.  Our students were fascinated by this presentation.  The presenter created a rainbow of lights on the gym wall and played music as we watched the lights change as the pitch of the music changed.  The presenter complimented our students on how they knew when to join in and when to be quiet.  He commented on how he had been to many schools and was impressed with our students’ behavior.  On February 27th a group of high school students from the area came to read to our kindergarten through 4th graders for the “Read to Teach Integration Project.”  The plan is for this group to come one day a month.  Each time they come to read, the story will be about acceptance, friendship, and diversity.  On March 2nd we celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday.  When this day comes around each classroom does their own activities based on his stories and we also usually read some of his books.  The cooks whipped up a delicious lunch of green eggs and ham and served the meal in their “Cat in the Hat” hats.  On March 14th we will be given a musical program by Jason Gay.  He’s a singer and songwriter.  His songs tie in to disabilities because Jason is a singer who stutters.  His message is that no matter what your disabilities might be, you can still follow your dreams as he did.  On March 24th our 35 fifth graders will head out for Tracy to go to the International Fair.  The students will be attending two sessions.  The first one talks about different cultures in our area and the second will give the students the opportunity to interact with foreign exchange students.  This is sponsored by “The Integration Collaborative Board.”  March 24th is also the end of the 3rd quarter.  We’ll have a workday on March 28th due to the Jazz Festival and then report cards will be sent home with the elementary students on March 31st.  We have had 5 fire drills in the fall, so we only need to get in 4 more to have the required 9.

Principal Olson reported that pre-registrations are almost all in for next year.  Now I will attempt to match the students’ needs with staff availability.  This is always the most challenging part of schedule building.  FCCLA is still going strong with a number of participants heading to state contests.  The Music people are preparing for their contests and all-state try-outs.  All-state try-outs were held last Thursday and Large Group competition is coming up on March 21st.  The Academic Decathlon team went to state competition and many students received medals.  We are one of the smaller schools in this event, but Mrs. Redman says the kids are fired up for next year already.  We will travel with some classes to see an integration lyceum on the hazards of TV violence, internet predators, etc.  The Senior Class Trip is set.  Parent night will be on March 21st.  They are headed to Los Angeles and San Diego.  Roughly 60% will be going on the trip.  The Indoor Air Quality Plan was reviewed.  We were doing most of the proper things already.  The staff is being surveyed again as to their concerns.  The janitor staff was given a schedule to maintain some of the different concern areas around this building.   Ex:  Ceiling tiles that are stained will be changed on a semi-annual basis; lockers cleaned quarterly, etc.  We will be looking into a program to help our students to write better.

Upon motion of Clarke, seconded by Myers and unanimously carried, to pay claims in the amount of $152,174.70.  Receipts were $479,697.64.

Upon motion of Clarke, seconded by Moldan and unanimously carried, to accept the resignation, due to retirement, of Robert Rise and to thank him for his many years of service to the district as a teacher and as a coach.

Upon motion of Kelsey, seconded by Moldan and unanimously carried, to accept the low bid from Protection Systems, Inc. to provide alarm system service to our District for the next school year.

Superintendent Brennan has received notice to negotiate from the Red Rock Central Educational Support Personnel Association.

Upon motion of Myers, seconded by Westerman and unanimously carried, to recognize the Red Rock Central Educational Support Personnel Association and their notice to negotiate.  The Negotiation Committee consisting of Mattison, Clarke, and Kelsey, with Derickson as alternate, will be setting up meetings at both Lamberton and Jeffers.
